The Lyceum

Therapy for stress and burnout

Is this stress, burnout or something underneath both?

Burnout is not just tiredness; it is a boundary crisis. It is held in place by perfectionism, difficulty delegating and the belief that your worth depends on your output, so rest feels like failure. CBT works on those drivers, not just the symptoms, rebuilding a sustainable relationship with work, rest and your own limits. At The Lyceum, Sanah Younis, a BABCP-accredited CBT therapist, delivers this in Chiswick, Ealing and Richmond, or online. Assessment explores workload, responsibility, rest, boundaries and self-evaluation rather than treating every exhaustion pattern as the same problem. Does this sound familiar? Rest produces guilt rather than relief. You are carrying more than feels sustainable but find it hard to delegate or stop. Your sense of worth feels tied to output, reliability or achievement. The signed approach combines CBT with acceptance, compassion-focused and schema-informed work where appropriate, addressing the beliefs and behaviour patterns that make rest or limits feel unsafe. What could become more possible A more sustainable relationship with work, rest and limits. Less pressure to earn worth through constant output. How we measure progress Measures are used only where clinically helpful. They inform formulation and review; they do not define a person or promise a particular outcome. GAD-7 alongside WSAS and/or MBI if used.

Frequently asked questions

Is burnout just being very tired?

Burnout can involve exhaustion, but assessment also explores workload, boundaries, self-evaluation and the patterns that may keep rest from helping.

Can CBT help if I cannot change my job immediately?

Assessment can consider the constraints you are living with and work on sustainable responses, boundaries and the beliefs that may be adding to the strain.

What is the difference between stress and burnout?

Stress is the feeling of having too many demands and too little time, but you still believe that once you get through the bottleneck, things will be okay. Burnout is the collapse that happens when that stress is chronic; it is deep emotional depletion, difficulty switching off, and a sense that resting is impossible because your worth is tied to your output. We go beyond just looking at your workload to restructure the boundaries and perfectionism keeping you trapped.

Can burnout happen even when I like my job?

Burnout is not reduced to whether someone values their work. Assessment can explore pressure, responsibility, rest, boundaries and the beliefs that make stopping or delegating feel unsafe, alongside the practical context a person is living in.

How can CBT help with chronic stress?

CBT can examine the behaviour patterns and beliefs that make rest, limits or uncertainty feel unsafe. Acceptance, compassion-focused and schema-informed work may also be considered where appropriate, with the focus agreed through assessment.

How long does burnout therapy take?

The work is open-ended with a formal review every six sessions. That allows the pace, practical constraints and focus to be reconsidered collaboratively rather than promising a fixed outcome or a standard number of sessions.
