I feel low, stuck, or disconnected.

A starting point for understanding possible patterns, not a diagnosis

Low mood, self doubt and difficult experiences can affect daily life in ways that are hard to put into words. This pathway is general information, not a diagnosis of depression, trauma related difficulties or another condition. An assessment can consider individual symptoms, history, physical health, safety, support and circumstances. Low mood and depression can affect interest, energy, motivation, sleep, concentration, relationships and daily functioning. They are not a choice, a weakness or a failure to be grateful. Similar experiences can overlap with grief, medication effects, anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, physical health concerns and practical pressures, so a webpage cannot establish one cause or the right treatment. Low self esteem can involve a harsh internal voice, doubt about one’s worth or difficulty taking in evidence of strengths. It may be connected with criticism, comparison, relationships, exclusion, difficult experiences or many other circumstances. Difficult or traumatic experiences can affect people in many ways. Some people notice memories, avoidance, heightened alertness, sleep changes, emotional numbness or relationship difficulties; others do not. After assessment, CBT based therapy may be one option to discuss. A clinician can explore thoughts, routines, withdrawal, self criticism, avoidance and activities that matter where relevant. Trauma focused CBT may be considered after comprehensive assessment where appropriate, with a suitably trained clinician, attention to consent, pace, current safety and other support. This is not an instruction to revisit traumatic material alone or confront distressing reminders. If there is immediate danger, thoughts of self harm, an inability to stay safe, severe physical deterioration or a sudden marked change in mental state, use an appropriate emergency, crisis or healthcare service rather than relying on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does this page diagnose depression or trauma related difficulties?

No. It provides general information only. An assessment can consider individual symptoms, history, health, safety and support needs.

Is CBT always the right support for low mood?

Not necessarily. Whether CBT based therapy, medical review, combined care or another route is relevant depends on an individual assessment.

Should I work through traumatic memories using this page?

No. This page is not a trauma treatment exercise. Trauma focused work should be planned with a suitably trained clinician when it is appropriate.
