You can learn CBT skills on your own, and for a mild, recent, single-issue difficulty a good self-help book or structured programme is often enough. Self-help tends to stall at the uncomfortable parts, and that is where a therapist earns their fee.
Who does well with self-help
The people we have seen succeed with a book or an app share two things. They have a low-complexity, single-issue problem, such as mild generalised anxiety or a specific, mild phobia. And they actually do the written exercises rather than reading the book like a novel. Reading about thought records is pleasant; filling them in at the kitchen table is the work.
Where it stalls
Self-help stalls at the parts you least want to do: facing a feared situation, dropping a safety behaviour, or noticing a belief you have held so long it feels like a fact. The clearest sign it has stalled is when you understand the model perfectly and your behaviour has not changed an inch. At that point the reading has quietly become a form of avoidance.

How to practise CBT at home
Track before you change: for two weeks, write down the thought, the feeling and what you did next, without trying to fix anything. Then pick one small prediction and test it. Keep a fixed worry slot. Schedule one meaningful activity a day into the diary. If you are doing all of this and the problem is still shaping your choices after a few months, that is the point to book an assessment.
Can you do schema therapy on your own?
Not really. Schema-level work targets patterns you cannot see from inside them, which is the whole difficulty; it needs another person in the room. Self-help books on schemas are useful for recognising the pattern, and that recognition is often what brings people to us.
What a therapist adds
A therapist builds the formulation with you, chooses the right experiments for it, and keeps you going when the work gets hard. Most of the people who come to us have already tried self-help. It was not wasted; it means they arrive knowing the language and ready to do the part they could not do alone.
